Since 1908, the Freret business corridor has remained a diverse market center that continues to define the Freret neighborhood. The product of Bouligny and Avart plantations, in its heyday Freret boasted nearly 80 businesses, a mini melting pot of the various cultures that included Italian owned Frank's Steakhouse, Chinese-owned Wah's Dry Cleaners, and Long's Bakery, the only kosher butcher shop in the city at that time. Today the corridor is home to nearly forty locally-owned and operated businesses and is one of the most vibrant neighborhood commercial strips in the city.

The Freret Main Street business corridor has served its residents and the surrounding community for almost 100 years. Nowhere else in only seven blocks can you service your car, fix your hair and polish your nails, drink at the bar, dine in for lunch, make groceries for dinner, rent a tux, purchase a gift for that special someone, spay the dog and neuter the cat, get a tattou, hire an attorney, buy insurance, learn about nursing, home ownership and landscaping, upholster your furniture, mix paint and find the tools you need to put it on with ~ all while you wait. Oh yeah, and the owner behind the counter knows your name.
