Neighbors United
Neighbors United was founded in 1974 by Shirley Barra and Dr. Olympia Boucree.  It started as a club and expanded over the years.  Their mission is to help people in the community get things done.  Thirty years later Neighbors United remains an active and vital neighborhood association that represents the real diversity of the Freret neighborhood.  Its founders, Ms. Barra and Dr. Boucree, remain very active, but newer residents have also have become involved.  Anyone interested in becoming involved in Neighbors United may contact Ms. Barra at 891-3456.

Night Out Against Crime
Neighbors United always has a big neighborhood party for Night Out Against Crime.  It is a time for neighbors to get together, eat good food and have fun.  Click here to see 2004 pictures.

Student Talent Art Revival (STAR) After School Program

NHS has had an after school art program for young people in the Freret neighborhood for the past nine years.  It provides our youngest neighbors with not only a "safe place" after school but art instruction that too often they do not obtain in the classroom.  The program was begun by local artist Joy Ebel as a Saturday "art and pizza."  It has been expanded to a five day a week after school program that is now run by Vidho Lorville.  Classes are held at Our Lady of Lourdes School at the corner of Freret & Napoleon.

The students have done many murals throughout the Freret neighborhood as well as smaller projects that are depicted below.  For the past two years students from Tulane University's Service Learning program have also volunteered with the program.

Community Enhancement Project

One of the objectives of the STAR is to do public art murals throughout the neighborhood to both brighten the neighborhood as well as give the kids a sense of pride at seeing their art in the community.

Art Show & Sale
Every year, the students from STAR enjoy having a show that provides the chance to not only display, but also sell the works of art.  Click here to see pictures.

Academy of the Sacred Heart & Our Lady of Lourdes Ceramic Relief Project
This was a wonderful collaboration between the young students of Our Lady of Lourdes and high school students at Sacred Heart Academy. The students at Our Lady of Lourdes, which does not have an art program, went to Sacred Heart to create individual pieces of ceramic that were then installed as a mosaic around the doorway to Our Lady of Lourdes at the corner of Freret and Napoleon.  Click here to see pictures.

Field Trips

In 2003, children from the Freret Street neighborhood went to the Back Street Cultural Museum in the Treme, and this year went on a trip to the New Orleans Museum of Art with Dooky Chase.  (Click here to see pictures.)  Other trips will be planned that will help them understand and appreciate the cultural diversity of New Orleans.
