What
is the Freret Main Street Program?
The
Freret Main Street Program is an economic development
project undertaken by Neighborhood
Housing Services of New Orleans (NHS) and
the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization
(NCR) to rejuvenate the Freret Street business
corridor. It also seeks to serve as a small business information
resource for merchants, new businesses and property owners
in the area.
Focusing
on the seven-block area between Napoleon and Jefferson
Avenues, the project uses the National Trust for Historic
Preservation's Four-Point
Approach, which concentrates on:
- Design
- improving the physical appearance of the street
through the Façade
Program, low-interest loans and financing
plans, and architectural assistance for our businesses.
- Organization
- empowering business and property owners in the area
via the [Name of Group]
Business and Property Owner Association. Currently,
we are in the process of re-organizing our business
and property owner association, which will include
an Executive Steering Committee that will develop
an annual work plan for the corridor. The organization
approach also allows us to build strong alliances
with other local and national organizations, including
banking and financial institutions, community groups,
corporations, schools and universities.
- Promotion
- developing marketing strategies for Freret through
the Take A Second Look campaign as well as
assisting individual businesses with coordinating
marketing plans.
- Economic
Restructuring - finding ways to generate
and increase funding for the area.
